Overview

Annapurna Circuit Trek linked with five districts of Nepal; Lamjung, Manang, Mustang, Myagdi, and Kaski. It takes more or less 20 days to complete the trek. Begins from eye-catching rice field of lowland and reach the highest pass Thorong La (5,416m). The path goes through the gorges of Marshyangdi river before swinging west into the dried land of Mustang. And also in the north, you can see the beautiful Annapurna Himalaya. The trek starts with driving from Kathmandu to Besishar is about 7 hours through the Prithivi highway. The views of bazaars, rivers, terraced field and villages from the highway make the journey remarkable. On the way of driving you can see the beautiful Himalaya; Annapurna II, Lamjung Himal, and Machhapurchhre. Besisahar is the headquarter of Lamjung district.

Annapurna Circuit trek gives the dramatic altitude changings starts from the lower than 1,000 meter and reach up to 5,416 meters. The trail includes the farmland, arid and also snowy field. The path leads to the attractive villages of wild diversity of the ethnic group. As well as the trail also offers the majestic views of Himalayas. The Gurung, Thakali, Magar and other Brahmins, so called Dalit; Damai, Kami etc are ethnic groups of the region.

After the Thorong la pass, the trail starts to descend towards Muktinath. Thorong La Pass is the highest point of Annapurna Circuit Trek. Muktinath, a place of nirvana and also one of the sacred places of Hindus and Buddhist. As entering the compound of Muktinath there are a Tibetan style prayer wheels, passes the Gomba and then reach Vishnu Mandir. It is a beautiful example of the good relationship between Hindu and Buddhism. So, it proves that Nepal a country of good interfaith.

Down trail of Jomsom goes through the Kagbeni. Kagbeni is located on the bank of Kaligandaki River. With exploring the worlds deepest gorges of Kaligandaki, and get to the natural hot spring. Having the shower in Hot spring is as a bonus. The trek also includes the Poon Hill the popular hill station for sunrise. From view tower of Poon Hill, we can see the range of Himalaya. Finally, you reach Pokhara, a beautiful city with three lakes. Fewa, Begnas, and Rupa, the sparkling view of Machhapuchhre make your eyes busy every moment.

  • Day 01
    Arrival at the Tribuwan International Airport in Kathmandu (1,345m)

    Our Airports representative welcomes at Airport and transfers to the hotel in a private tourist vehicle.

    Pre-trip meeting and sightseeing in Kathmandu (1345)

    The exciting second day of Annapurna Circuit treks being with a short meeting at the hotel lobby. After finishing the meeting you will visit some historically and culturally significance places with your professional tour guide. And have to some little shopping for trek after the tour. So this will be the quite busiest day of the itinerary.

    In the meeting, you need to fill up the participate agreement form which legally declares that you are traveling with Apex the Asia Holidays. You required to bring a copy of your travel insurance copy, original passport, 4 copies PP size photos and have to clear due payment of trek.

    After completing the legal works then your guides will introduce you and check your trekking gears by trek guide and let you know the time for the evening meeting to fixed the tomorrows departure time and place as well as buy some remain items if required.

    During the city tour you will visit Pashupatinath Temple- Hindus most important and biggest shrine, Boudhastupa- Buddhist biggest pilgrimage of Nepal and Bhaktapur Durbar Square- a famous and oldest durbar (ancient royal palace).

    Drive to Besisahar (830m) by bus - 7 hrs

    After breakfast, you will pick by our trekking crews and 7hrs drive to Beshishar. From you can see the Lamjung Himal.

    Trek to Bahundanda (1,310 m) - 5 hrs

    Todays trail climb to Gurung village via Khudi offering the spectacular view of Himalchuli and Nagdi Chuli. Bulbule is a checkpoint of Annapurna Circuit trek, where we have to show the permit. After 30min walking, we reach lunch place Nadi. The continuing trail of Bahundada (1310m) is gradually step up, it takes about 2.5hrs.

    Trek to Chamje (1,400m) - 5 hrs

    From Bahundanda, the trail descend to Syange at 1070m where you see the large waterfall and then you will cross a suspension bridge over Marshyandi River. Afterward, you will reach a village called Jagat that also known as the stone village. Just before reaching the Chamje (1400m) you can see the awesome waterfall.

    Trek to Bagarchhap (2,160m) - 5 hrs

    The rocky trail follows the Marshyandi River and climbs to Tal (1,675m). The trail continues gradually up to Dharapani, where the stone Chorten gives the flavor of Tibetan. Dharapani is the another permit checkpoint, and it also the junction where you can meet the people from the Larkey La Pass of Manaslu trek. When you reach the Bagarchhap, you can see the village surrounding by the apple orchard and maize field.

    Trek to Chame (2,630m) - 5 hrs

    The trip begins to climb Temang through the jungle and then reach Chame via Thanchowk and Koto. Just right back Mt. Manaslu is following the up to Thorong Pass. Thanchowk is the place for lunch.
    When your entry at Chame (headquarter of Manag district) you will be rewarded by perfect views of Annapurna II and Manaslu.

    Trek to Pisang (3,200m) - 5 hrs

    Following the itinerary towards Pisang through the deep black forest with narrow valley and crossing the bridges. Along the path, you can see many Chortens, ( memorial places) and the Vratang is famous for Apple nursery.   From the second bridge at 3,040m, the rock face view of Paungda Danda is really begun to appear, continue trail joins to Pisang. You will have lunch at Dhikur Pokhari and heads off to the Pisang. In the late afternoon hike to Upper Pisang about 2 hrs. and back to lower Pisang for the overnight stay. The locals people of Pisang have been migrated a century ago from Tibet, so you can see find the features alike with Tibetan, their lifestyle, architecture, and religions.

    Trek to Manang (3,540m) - 5 hrs

    You have two alternative ways to get Manang from Pisang, north and south of Marshyandi River both routes meets at Munji. The southern route via Hunde is quite easy and less climbing than via Ghyaru. The continuing trail goes through the Bhraga (3475m) nearby Manang at 3540m.

    Acclimatization day at Manang village

    Today is a rest day to acclimatizing, the day you will visit Chhokar Dada, a viewpoint from where you can see magnificent views Mt. Ganagpurna, Gangpurna Lake, Tilicho Peak. In the evening, you walk around the village and back to the guesthouse.

    Trek to Yak Kharka (4,050m) - 5 hrs

    You leave Manang and continue to Yak Kharka, the trail gradually climbs up to Gunsang Manang via Tenki Manang along the Jarsang Khola Valley. Today is the best day for beautiful Himalaya peaks, you can see Mt. Annapurna II, III, IV, Mt. Gangapurna, Mt. Tilicho, Mt. Manaslu, Pisang Peak, Chulu Peak etc.  and finally reach Yak Kharka (4,050m).

    Trek to Thorong Phedi (4,450m) - 5 hrs

    The beginning trail is gradually up and once you cross the bridge there is a risk landslide area about 10 minutes. Along the trail, you will in numerous of blue sheep and yaks. And finally, reach Thorong Phedi (4,450m). Lunch will have at Phedi, where you stay overnight.

    Trek to Muktinath (3,800m) via Thorong La pass (5,416m) - 8 hrs

    The toughest and longest day begins before sunrise at 4 AM to get Thorong-La Pass (5416m) by 9-10 AM. Afterward, the weather condition will not favorable, its strong windy, some problems may arise due to the altitude and snow, about four hours walking you will meet pass, which is marked with Chortens and Prayer flags, the views from Pass is really fascinating. When you cross the Pass again you need to walk other more 4hrs to get Muktinath (3800m). 

    Muktinath is a holy town in the region, thousand of pilgrims especially Hindus and Buddhist visits every year; September is a prime month to visit. Literally, Muktinath is a place of Nirvana, home of Muktinath Temple and monasteries. Lord Vishnu is the main god of the Temple, the attraction of the temple is 108 waterspouts and Jwala Mai Temple. Jwala Mai is a temple which has a natural eternal flame fueled.

    Trek to Marpha (2,670m) - 6 hrs

    From the day our trekking is going on lower altitude, and entering the windy valley. You will have two option to choose the path either through the Kagbeni or another. The trail of Kagbeni is a bit longer, and the meeting point of both paths is Ealkebhatti. And again additional 2 hours walk reach Jomsom, the capital town of Mustang. You will have lunch at Jomsom and continue to Marpha. Marpha is a legendary hometown for Apple orchids, where Apple Brandy is another specialty of the town.

    Trek to Ghasa (2,010m) - 6 hrs

    Continuing trail following Kali Gandaki River to get Ghasa for 6hrs. The beginning of the trail is crossing the villages and river bank, first, you will meet Tukuche, and then cross the Thak Khola. After few hours walking you will reach Kalo Pani, the lunch place via Larjung village and Kobang. After lunch the trail descend towards Ghasa, it takes about 1.5hours.

    Trek to Tatopani (1,190 m) - 5 hrs

    The descending trail leads to Tatopani, a relaxing place. It is famous for hot spring. On the trail, before you reach Tatopani you will see lots of orange gardens, popular waterfall- Ruptse and get in worlds deepest gorge of Kaligandaki at Dana. Once when you get to Tatopani you will have lunch and spend the tranquil day here. Having the bath in natural hot spring is a rewarding activity of the trek.

    Trek to Ghorepani (2,840m) - 7 hrs

    Leave the hot spring and ascend to Ghorepani, a popular place of Annapurna region. The path of today is climbing up to Ghorepani, from the altitude of 1190m to 2840meter, so it is the tough day.  Ghorepani is the village of Magar, where you can see the different picturesque landscapes, beautiful Himalaya.

    Hike to Poon Hill (3,210m) and trek to Nayapul (1,010m)6 hrs and drive to Pokhara 1.5 hrs

    Get up early morning and hike up to Poon Hill (3210m), the stunning sunrise view over the mountains is really worth full and after spending one hour on the hill, back to Ghorepani have hot breakfast and off to Nayapul. Trail leads through the rhododendron forest and large Magar (ethnic group) village and finally reach to Nayapul via Tikhedunga, and then drive to Pokhara City.

    Pokhara city tour

    After a long trip in mountain today, you visit city covering religious, historical places in Pokhara. The day tour begins from after tour breakfast. During the tour, you will visit Phewa Lake, Barahi Temple, Devis fall, Gupteshwor Cave, Museums, Tibetan refugee camp.

Altitude Sickness Info

Acute Mountain Sickness may happen when the travellers rapidly up to the height of 3000m. Our itineraries are designed with rest days. Once when you arrived in high altitude, your acclimatization line will rise your body to start adjust. The commonly happened in altitude are shortness of breath, light headache, whereas the mountain sickness is quite different which involves the severe headache, vomiting etc.

The trained and expert guides will everyday advise you about your health conditions, requirements and altitude sickness while you are trekking, hiking and climbing. That’s why you should not be worry about the sickness. Also we would like to recommend you to meet your doctor, advisor before you start your travel.

Given some information helps you to get rid from the Acute Mountain Sickness.

There are three stages of altitude sickness and symptoms.

Normal AMS Symptoms
The given altitude symptoms may every trekkers will have experience but no worries these are common.
  1. Need more sleep than normal sleep time
  2. Occasional loss of hunger.
  3. Vivid, wild dreams especially at around 2500-3800 meters in altitude.
  4. Periodic breathing.
  5. Runny nose.
  6. Increasing urination while moving to/at higher altitudes (a good sign)
  7. Dizziness.

Minor AMS Symptoms

The trekkers when they entry on high Himalayan Valleys get mild AMS that your having symptoms. The symptoms to be altitude sickness at least you have given one indication.

  1. Hard to breath
  2. Dizziness
  3. Dry raspy cough
  4. Runny nose
  5. Loss of hunger
  6. Weakness
  7. Nausea
  8. Mild headache

What to do when Minor Symptoms does not stop?

  1. If the symptoms developing while walking, then stop and take relax, drink water. Drink frequently.
  2. If symptoms do not stop and developing continuously then stop take rest and drink water and take Diamox of 125 -250mg. Drink more water.
  3. If symptoms growing in the evening, take 125-250mg Diamox and drink plenty of fluids again.
  4. If symptoms partially go away but are still annoying it is safe to take another 250mg Diamox 6-8 hours later.
  5. If the symptoms continue getting worse then you have to descending for a few hours which is more merits than staying at the same altitude.

Serious AMS Symptoms
The given conditions are quite danger so descend immediately

  1. Severe headache.
  2. Persistent vomiting and dizziness.
  3. Ataxia (loss of co-ordination, an inability to walk in a straight line, making the sufferer look drunk)
  4. Losing consciousness (inability to stay awake or understand instructions.
  5. Hallucinations.
  6. Liquid sounds in the lungs.
  7. Very persistent, sometimes watery, cough.
  8. Difficulty breathing.
  9. Rapid breathing or feeling breathless at rest.
  10. Coughing clear fluid, pink phlegm or blood (a very bad sign)
  11. Severe lethargy/fatigue.
  12. Marked blueness of face and lips.
  13. High resting heartbeat (over 130 beats per minute)
  14. Mild symptoms rapidly getting worse

Dangerous cases of AMS

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)


The brain swelling with the fluid is HACE. It involves disorientation, lethargy and nausea. Before attacking the HACE, patient will have the symptoms of fever, ataxia, photophobia, and rapid heartbeat. Unconsciousness and coma from HACE can be lead to death within 12-20hrs from the onsets of symptoms. In the initial phase of ataxia begin treatment with medication, oxygen and dexamethasone.

Normally, 4 to 8mg of dexamethasone is given as a first dose, then 4mg every six hours, Diamox every 12 hours and 2-4 liters /minute oxygen. The patient must have to be descended.

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)


The condition, that buildup the fluid in the air sacs of lungs is HAPE. HAPE symptoms start progressively within 2-4 days in high altitude. Shortness of breath at rest, cough, weakness and chest tightness and at least two of; fast heart beat rate, wheezing heard in lungs, bluish appearance of the skin are the symptoms of HAPE. Descent to the lower altitude is needed if patient does not get better with oxygen. The Gamow Bag may be use to the lower altitude if a person is in the backcountry unable to descend immediately because of weather.

Prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

  1. Plenty of acclimatization above 3500 meters.
  2. Do not take sleeping pill, no alcohol and smoking
  3. Drink more water (Boiled, mineral/ clean or treated) or any fluids – at least 4 litters per day.
  4. Climb up high altitude and sleep at low altitude.
  5. Never do trek/ travel without guide and porters
  6. Follow the advice from your guide, hotel, local, and guidebook.
  7. Must have to decent if mild symptoms rapidly getting worse.

First aid kit is a basic list of common medicines.

  2. Plasters/Band-Aids
  3. Iodine or water filter (optional)
  4. Moleskin/Second skin - for blisters
  5. Antiseptic ointment for cuts
  6. Anti-bacterial throat lozenges (with antiseptic)
  7. Aspirin/Paracetamol - general painkiller
  8. Oral rehydration salts
  9. Broad-spectrum antibiotic (Norfloxacin or ciprofloxin)
  10. Anti-diarrhoea medication (antibiotic)
  11. Diarrhoea stopper (Imodium - optional)
  12. Antibiotic for Guardia or similar microbe or bacteria
  13. Diamox 250/500mg (for altitude sickness)
  14. Sterile Syringe set (anti-AIDS precaution)
  15. Gel hand cleaner.

Acute Mountain Sickness may happen when the travelers rapidly up to the height of 3000m. Our itineraries are designed with rest days. Once when you arrived in high altitude, your acclimatization line will rise your body to start to adjust. The commonly happened in altitude are shortness of breath, light headache, whereas the mountain sickness is quite different which involves a severe headache, vomiting etc.

The trained and expert guides will every day advise you about your health conditions, requirements, and altitude sickness while you are trekking, hiking and climbing. That’s why you should not be worry about the sickness. Also, we would like to recommend you to meet your doctor, advisor before you start your travel.

Given some information helps you to get rid of the Acute Mountain Sickness.

There are three stages of altitude sickness and symptoms.

Normal AMS Symptoms
The given altitude symptoms may every trekker will have experience but no worries these are common.
  1. Need more sleep than normal sleep time
  2. Occasional loss of hunger.
  3. Vivid, wild dreams especially at around 2500-3800 meters in altitude.
  4. Periodic breathing.
  5. A runny nose.
  6. Increasing urination while moving to/at higher altitudes (a good sign)
  7. Dizziness.

Minor AMS Symptoms

The trekkers when they entry on high Himalayan Valleys get mild AMS that youre having symptoms. The symptoms to be altitude sickness at least you have given one indication.

  1. Hard to breath
  2. Dizziness
  3. Dry raspy cough
  4. Runny nose
  5. Loss of hunger
  6. Weakness
  7. Nausea
  8. Mild headache

What to do when Minor Symptoms does not stop?

  1. If the symptoms developing while walking, then stop and take relax, drink water. Drink frequently.
  2. If symptoms do not stop and developing continuously then stop take rest and drink water and take Diamox of 125 -250mg. Drink more water.
  3. If symptoms growing in the evening, take 125-250mg Diamox and drink plenty of fluids again.
  4. If symptoms partially go away but are still annoying it is safe to take another 250mg Diamox 6-8 hours later.
  5. If the symptoms continue getting worse then you have to descend for a few hours which is more merits than staying at the same altitude.

Serious AMS Symptoms
The given conditions are quite danger so descend immediately

  1. A severe headache.
  2. Persistent vomiting and dizziness.
  3. Ataxia (loss of co-ordination, an inability to walk in a straight line, making the sufferer look drunk)
  4. Losing consciousness (inability to stay awake or understand instructions.
  5. Hallucinations.
  6. Liquid sounds in the lungs.
  7. Very persistent, sometimes watery, cough.
  8. Difficulty breathing.
  9. Rapid breathing or feeling breathless at rest.
  10. Coughing clear fluid, pink phlegm or blood (a very bad sign)
  11. Severe lethargy/fatigue.
  12. Marked blueness of face and lips.
  13. High resting heartbeat (over 130 beats per minute)
  14. Mild symptoms rapidly getting worse

Dangerous cases of AMS

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)


The brain swelling with the fluid is HACE. It involves disorientation, lethargy, and nausea. Before attacking the HACE, the patient will have the symptoms of fever, ataxia, photophobia, and rapid heartbeat. Unconsciousness and coma from HACE can be lead to death within 12-20hrs from the onsets of symptoms. In the initial phase of ataxia begin treatment with medication, oxygen, and dexamethasone.

Normally, 4 to 8mg of dexamethasone is given as a first dose, then 4mg every six hours, Diamox every 12 hours and 2-4 liters /minute oxygen. The patient must have to be descended.

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)


The condition, that builds up the fluid in the air sacs of lungs is HAPE. HAPE symptoms start progressively within 2-4 days in high altitude. Shortness of breath at rest, cough, weakness and chest tightness and at least two of; fast heartbeat rate, wheezing heard in lungs, the bluish appearance of the skin are the symptoms of HAPE. Descent to the lower altitude is needed if the patient does not get better with oxygen. The Gamow Bag may be used to the lower altitude if a person is in the backcountry unable to descend immediately because of weather.

Prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

  1. Plenty of acclimatization above 3500 meters.
  2. Do not take sleeping pill, no alcohol and smoking
  3. Drink more water (Boiled, mineral/ clean or treated) or any fluids – at least 4 liters per day.
  4. Climb up high altitude and sleep at low altitude.
  5. Never do trek/ travel without guide and porters
  6. Follow the advice from your guide, hotel, local, and guidebook.
  7. Must have to decent if mild symptoms rapidly getting worse.

First Aid Kit
First aid kit is a basic list of common medicines.

  1. Bandage for sprains
  2. Plasters/Band-Aids
  3. Iodine or water filter (optional)
  4. Moleskin/Second skin - for blisters
  5. Antiseptic ointment for cuts
  6. Anti-bacterial throat lozenges (with antiseptic)
  7. Aspirin/Paracetamol - general painkiller
  8. Oral rehydration salts
  9. Broad-spectrum antibiotic (Norfloxacin or ciprofloxacin)
  10. Anti-diarrhoea medication (antibiotic)
  11. Diarrhea stopper (Imodium - optional)
  12. Antibiotic for Guardia or similar microbe or bacteria
  13. Diamox 250/500mg (for altitude sickness)
  14. Sterile Syringe set (anti-AIDS precaution)
  15. Gel hand cleaner.

I have never thought of myself as a hiker or a trekker, but somehow, the idea of trekking through the Himalayas and venturing through Nepals and the worlds highest mountain seems exhilarating and almost out of reach.
