Overview

Langtang Helambu and Gosaikunda trek has located the northern part of Kathmandu and just southern border of Tibet. The trek offers the beautiful scenario of the Tamang Village and also Sherpa village in Helambu. The trek follows the river upstream through the forest of pine, bamboo, and rhododendron. Ascending through the pasture and arrive at meadows of Kyanjin Gompa.

The trail of Gosaikunda climb more steeply through the farmland and reach the alpine ridge. The ridge offers the panoramic views of huge Himalaya and gets to the sacred high altitude lakes. Gosaikunda, Saraswatikunda, and Bhairabkunda are the most sacred and important lakes. Also, the trail attempts glaciers walk and get pinnacle of the trekking peaks.

Gosaikunda Lake is at the altitude of 4300m. Every year thousand of pilgrims visit especially on the full moon of August. Which is also the sacred place for Buddhism. According to the Hindu myth, other two lakes were formed by Lord Shiva by his Trishul (trident). He dug the ground to get water. These lakes are the main source of Trishuli River.

The Helambu valley is popularizing with its natural beauty and climates. Helambu valley lacks the mountain view of Langtang and Gosainkunda. It is also the fine winter culture trek. Langtang valley and Gosaikunda trek logistically easy, it does not require the special permits, not involves the busy flights. It is also the consider as the good teahouse trek for them does not like to go busy and crowded trek like Annapurna and Everest.

    Arrival at the Tribuwan International Airport in Kathmandu (1,345m)

    Our Airports representative welcomes at Airport and transfers to the hotel in a private tourist vehicle.

    Pre-trip meeting and sightseeing in Kathmandu (1345)

    The day beings with a meeting and introducing with the trek and tour guide. About 8 am we organize the meeting in your hotel lobby. The meeting finalizes the preparation of the trek, and your trek guide will suggest you about gears what you have. In meeting you need to bring, original passport, three copies of passport copy size photos, and travel insurance copy. And also we will bring your attention to clear the due amount, if any legal and sign the legally binding trip form as well as the non-liability disclaimers.

    Sightseeing will start after the meeting and your breakfast; the trip includes the guide and private tourist vehicle. Day tour covers the most important religious and popular royal palaces such as Pashupatinath Temple, Bouddhanath Stupa, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Pashupatinath Temple is the world most popular Hindu temple, and also the place of cremation lies on the bank of a holy river called Bagmati where Hindu holy people; Sadhu meditating, pilgrims bathing. The process of cremation is burning the dead body with firewood and ghee. Bouddhanath Stupa is one the biggest Buddhist shrine of the worlds, where you can see the monks are praying in monasteries surrounding the stupa. And the next spot for the day is Bhaktapur Durbar Square, which is famous with the name of Fifty-Five Windows Durbar; its architect designs mesmerized the peoples. Main attractions of the durbar are The Lion Gate, Golden Gates, The statue of King Bhupatindra Malla and the pottery where the potter makes the different kinds of pots.
    After back to the hotel, you will have few hours for your last shopping for trek and exploration the Thamel city, one of the busiest touristic town of Kathmandu.

    Drive to Syabru Besi (1,462m) on a public bus - 8 hrs

    The trip begins early morning drive to Syabru Besi. Your guide and trekking staffs will pick up you from the hotel and take you to the bus station. Driving along the mighty Trisuli River and through ridgeline vistas to Syabru via Dhunche with the peep of Mt. Ganesh Himal makes pleasurable. After driving 8hrs you will reach Syabru Besi.

    Trek to Lama Hotel (2,500m) - 5 hrs

    By crossing the Trishuli River and follow the Langtang Khola is the first step of this trek. The gradually ascending rocky path crosses the Pahiro and meets Bamboo, where you can have your lunch. Bamboo is located on the bank of Langtang Khola, from here in about two-hour, you will reach Lama Hotel (2500m).

    Trek to the Langtang village (3,307m) - 5 hrs

    Langtang village is a typical and one of the oldest villages among the trekking routes. The trail begins gradually ascend to a beautiful valley with yaks via Gumanechok at Ghoda tabela that holds the meaning of Horse Stable. The views of mountains are impressive closer.

    Trek to Kyanjin Gompa (3,798m) - 4 hrs

    Today you will trek to Kyanjin Gompa (3798m), a beautiful village of the lap of Langtang Lirung. The trek for today is shorter than other day but sufficient for acclimatizing. The cheese factory is the most interesting to visit and do not forget to try some cheese as fresh as it. In the village also you can climb some hillocks.

    Kyanjin Gompa exploration day

    Today is a rest day of your trek. You can explore the Kyanjin, Cheese factory, monastery, enjoy with spectacular views of tumbling galciers of Langtang Lirung and also you can climb the Kyanjin Ri (4350m) the highest point of the trek.

    Trek to Thulo Syabru (2,250m) - 5 hrs

    The up and down trail lead you to Thulo Syabru, en route you can see the monkeys, red pandas, and various of birds species. The pleasing village offers you to the splendid view of Ganesh Himal (7110m) and Langtang Himal.

    Trek to Singompa (3,250m) - 5 hrs

    The trail leads you to Sing gompa (3250m) with ascent path until getting Phoprang Danda (3200m) via Dursagang (2660m), your walking effort is powered by the stunning views of Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal including Tibetan mountains. Afterward crossing the Cheese factory you will reach Sing Gompa.

    Trek to Gosaikunda (4,300m) - 5 hrs

    The trail begins steadily climb up to Lauribinayak and continue to ascend to Gosaikunda along the rugged way with the views of Manaslu Himalaya Range, Ganesh Himal Range, Tibetan Himalaya and in clear weather also you can see the rises Annapurna. When you pass the huts in the pasture of Lauribinayak you will see the lakes Gosaikunda and another many lake including Saraswatikunda, and Bhairabkunda. Gosaikunda is made by Lord Shiva with his trident (Trishul) to quench his thirsty after when he had taken the poison.

    Cross the Laurebina-La pass (4,610m) then trek to Ghopte (3,430m) - 6 hrs

    After breakfast, you start to hike up to Gosaikunda, cross the Lauribinak (4610m), which is the highest point of the trek. With impressing views of Himalaya trail drags to Langtang Lirung and descending trail from Lirung you will reach Ghopte.

    Trek to Melamchi Gaon via Tharepati Pass (3,490m) - 6 hrs

    The ascending and descending trail throughout rhododendron, oak, and juniper forest meet Tharepati, from Tharepati trail gradually descends to Melamchi Gaon. Along the road, you can see the settlement of cattle herders at 3579m. Melamchi Gaon is colonized by Sherpa, which is surrounded by jungles where you can also visit some Buddhist monasteries.

    Trek to Tarkeghyang (2,743m) - 5 hrs

    It takes five hours to get Tarkeghyang from Melamchi Gaon. In the beginning, the trail goes down and cross Melamchi River and hike up to Tarkeghyang, a beautiful Sherpa village including an oldest and biggest monastery.

    Trek to Shermathang (2, 621ms) - 5.5 hrs

    After breakfast, the easy trail takes you Shermathang over the forest and crossing tiny streams. Shermathang is another village of Sherpa family; along the trail, you can see the Jugal Himal range.

    Trek to Melamchi Pul Bazaar (8,46m) - 5 hrs

    Walking to Melamchi Pul Bazaar from Shermanthang is quite enjoyable throughout cultivated fields, many villages, their activities and interacting with locals. After five hours walking you will reach Pul Bazaar.

Altitude Sickness Info

Acute Mountain Sickness may happen when the travellers rapidly up to the height of 3000m. Our itineraries are designed with rest days. Once when you arrived in high altitude, your acclimatization line will rise your body to start adjust. The commonly happened in altitude are shortness of breath, light headache, whereas the mountain sickness is quite different which involves the severe headache, vomiting etc.

The trained and expert guides will everyday advise you about your health conditions, requirements and altitude sickness while you are trekking, hiking and climbing. That’s why you should not be worry about the sickness. Also we would like to recommend you to meet your doctor, advisor before you start your travel.

Given some information helps you to get rid from the Acute Mountain Sickness.

There are three stages of altitude sickness and symptoms.


Normal AMS Symptoms
The given altitude symptoms may every trekkers will have experience but no worries these are common.

  1. Need more sleep than normal sleep time
  2. Occasional loss of hunger.
  3. Vivid, wild dreams especially at around 2500-3800 meters in altitude.
  4. Periodic breathing.
  5. Runny nose.
  6. Increasing urination while moving to/at higher altitudes (a good sign)
  7. Dizziness.

Minor AMS Symptoms
The trekkers when they entry on high Himalayan Valleys get mild AMS that your having symptoms. The symptoms to be altitude sickness at least you have given one indication.

  1. Hard to breath
  2. Dizziness
  3. Dry raspy cough
  4. Runny nose
  5. Loss of hunger
  6. Weakness
  7. Nausea
  8. Mild headache

What to do when Minor Symptoms does not stop?

  1. If the symptoms developing while walking, then stop and take relax, drink water. Drink frequently.
  2. If symptoms do not stop and developing continuously then stop take rest and drink water and take Diamox of 125 -250mg. Drink more water.
  3. If symptoms growing in the evening, take 125-250mg Diamox and drink plenty of fluids again.
  4. If symptoms partially go away but are still annoying it is safe to take another 250mg Diamox 6-8 hours later.
  5. If the symptoms continue getting worse then you have to descending for a few hours which is more merits than staying at the same altitude.

Serious AMS Symptoms
The given conditions are quite danger so descend immediately

  1. Severe headache.
  2. Persistent vomiting and dizziness.
  3. Ataxia (loss of co-ordination, an inability to walk in a straight line, making the sufferer look drunk)
  4. Losing consciousness (inability to stay awake or understand instructions.
  5. Hallucinations.
  6. Liquid sounds in the lungs.
  7. Very persistent, sometimes watery, cough.
  8. Difficulty breathing.
  9. Rapid breathing or feeling breathless at rest.
  10. Coughing clear fluid, pink phlegm or blood (a very bad sign)
  11. Severe lethargy/fatigue.
  12. Marked blueness of face and lips.
  13. High resting heartbeat (over 130 beats per minute)
  14. Mild symptoms rapidly getting worse

Dangerous cases of AMS

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)


The brain swelling with the fluid is HACE. It involves disorientation, lethargy and nausea. Before attacking the HACE, patient will have the symptoms of fever, ataxia, photophobia, and rapid heartbeat. Unconsciousness and coma from HACE can be lead to death within 12-20hrs from the onsets of symptoms. In the initial phase of ataxia begin treatment with medication, oxygen and dexamethasone.

Normally, 4 to 8mg of dexamethasone is given as a first dose, then 4mg every six hours, Diamox every 12 hours and 2-4 liters /minute oxygen. The patient must have to be descended.

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)

The condition, that buildup the fluid in the air sacs of lungs is HAPE. HAPE symptoms start progressively within 2-4 days in high altitude. Shortness of breath at rest, cough, weakness and chest tightness and at least two of; fast heart beat rate, wheezing heard in lungs, bluish appearance of the skin are the symptoms of HAPE. Descent to the lower altitude is needed if patient does not get better with oxygen. The Gamow Bag may be use to the lower altitude if a person is in the backcountry unable to descend immediately because of weather.

Prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

  1. Plenty of acclimatization above 3500 meters.
  2. Do not take sleeping pill, no alcohol and smoking
  3. Drink more water (Boiled, mineral/ clean or treated) or any fluids – at least 4 litters per day.
  4. Climb up high altitude and sleep at low altitude.
  5. Never do trek/ travel without guide and porters
  6. Follow the advice from your guide, hotel, local, and guidebook.
  7. Must have to decent if mild symptoms rapidly getting worse.

First Aid Kit
First aid kit is a basic list of common medicines.

  1. Bandage for sprains
  2. Plasters/Band-Aids
  3. Iodine or water filter (optional)
  4. Moleskin/Second skin - for blisters
  5. Antiseptic ointment for cuts
  6. Anti-bacterial throat lozenges (with antiseptic)
  7. Aspirin/Paracetamol - general painkiller
  8. Oral rehydration salts
  9. Broad-spectrum antibiotic (Norfloxacin or ciprofloxin)
  10. Anti-diarrhoea medication (antibiotic)
  11. Diarrhoea stopper (Imodium - optional)
  12. Antibiotic for Guardia or similar microbe or bacteria
  13. Diamox 250/500mg (for altitude sickness)
  14. Sterile Syringe set (anti-AIDS precaution)
  15. Gel hand cleaner.

Equipment List

This is a section where you get the general idea equipment that you need in Langtang, Helambu trek. The important and serious part of equipment selection depends on the trekking season, trekking days, and maximum altitude.

Trekkers personal goods such as money purse, cameras, cell phones and the cosmetic items that you need in day time, while you are hiking. Porter carries others your heavy equipment.
Initial

  1. Day Pack
  2. Duffel Bag
  3. Down jacket and sleeping bag
  4. Upper Body - Head / Ears / Eyes
  5. Baseball cap can protect your ear and neck from the sunlights.
  6. Warm wool or synthetic hat that cover your ears
  7. Balaclava - lightweight, thinner variety
  8. UV protection glacier glasses with side shields and a hard-sided storage case. In high altitude automatically the atmosphere is thinner than low altitude so, the sunlights are quite strong in mountain, which affect our eyes. For those people who are wearing the prescription glasses, please requesting you to speaks with your doctor about the prescription glacier glasses.
  9. Headlamp: Headlamp is a one of the basic for you during the trek because treks are in mountain where not plenty of electricity is. Make sure to bring extra lithium batteries.

Hand

  1. A pair of liner synthetic/ woolen gloves for the mild days.
  2. A pair of heavy woolen gloves for morning and evening time.
  3. A pair shell gloves or mitts Gore-Tex is preferred for keeping hands dry.

Core Body

  1. Two cotton t-shirts.
  2. A synthetic t-shirt.
  3. Two long sleeve polyesters, light colored shirts for sunny days. V-neck zipper provides additional venting options which are good for changing temperatures.
  4. A soft shell jacket, water resistant, with insulation, underarm ventilation zippers. Full front zipper is preferable for ventilation.
  5. A medium to heavy weight expedition down parka w/hood.
  6. For women two synthetic sports bras, no cotton!

Lower Body – Legs

  1. Three pairs nylon-hiking shorts, not cotton!
  2. Underwear, stay away from cotton
  3. Two pair lightweight long underwear
  4. A pair soft shell pants - synthetic, full zip from top and bottom preferabl
  5. Two pair trekking pants, preferably that zip on/off at the knees.
  6. A pair hard shell pants. Waterproof / breathable, Gore-Tex or equivalent is best
  7. A pair cotton pants
  8. Especially for the women a full length skirt.

Feet

  1. At least four pair of liner socks, synthetic.
  2. Three pair heavy weight socks to be worn over liner socks
  3. A pair light weight socks, a good option for the lower / warmer parts of the trail and also on lodges at the time of dinner.
  4. A pair light to medium weight water proof hiking/trekking boots. Make sure the size and should have to be avoidable for blister.
  5. A pair light trekking shoes or sneakers to wear in and about camps or lodge
  6. Sandals are optional for the trek.

Medicine and First Aid

  1. Extra Strength Excedrin for altitude related headaches
  2. Ibuprofen for general aches and pains
  3. Pepto bismol capsules for upset stomach or diarrhea
  4. Diamox (commonly prescribed as Acetazolamide) 125 or 250mg tablets for altitude sickness

 

Your guides will have more extensive medical gear, but you should have the basics.

Miscellaneous, but Important

  1. Passport and extra passport photos (4 copies)
  2. Airline ticket(s)
  3. Visa (if required and acquired in advance)
  4. Immunization record
  5. Durable wallet / pouch for travel documents, money and passport
  6. Two water bottles one liter wide-mouth Nalgene and one insulator
  7. Lip balm. At least SPF 20, 2 sticks.
  8. Sunscreen. SPF 40 is recommended and should be relatively new since it loses its effectiveness over time
  9. Toiletry kit. Be sure to include toilet paper stored in a plastic bag, hand wipes, and liquid hand sanitizer, towel, soap, etc

Optional

  1. A pair of adjustable trekking poles, this is great for downhill trek, and even it is listed in optional.
  2. Favorite snack foods, two pounds for maximum limits.
  3. Books and other devices for relax during the trek and rest time.
  4. For your records, camera, a DSLR, Go-Pro Cameras.
  5. Hydration bladder with drinking tube and tube insulator
  6. A urination bottle for men and a pee funnel for woman, as you might want to void that chilly late night trip
  7. A small stainless steel thermos

The above list guides for you to buy the goods. There are so many options for you, they different brand and version, so it would be better to buy as per your experience. Most of the things are easily available in Kathmandu as well in cheap price.

I have never thought of myself as a hiker or a trekker, but somehow, the idea of trekking through the Himalayas and venturing through Nepals and the worlds highest mountain seems exhilarating and almost out of reach.
